How Personalization Works

There are three personas identified for the site: OEM, Research & Development, and Marketing. The site will assign a visitor to a persona based on a weighted points system. Points will be accrued based on viewing content targeted to a persona as well as participating in engagement activities. The visitor will be identified to be within the single persona for which they have the highest total points value which will change over time based on behavior.

When a visitor lands on a page that contains personalized content, selection of which content to display is determined by the personalization algorithm. The personalization algorithm considers the following attributes:

  • The visitor’s identified persona
  • The posted date of all the content in the system
  • The number of views of all the content in the system
  • The points assigned for the visitor’s persona for all the content in the system
  • The last date viewed the visitor viewed each piece of content in the system

The algorithm will select all the content in the system targeted for the visitor’s current persona and prioritize, in order:

  • The content the visitor has not viewed within the last 48 hours
  • Newer content before old content
  • Content weighted higher for a specific persona before content weighted lower
  • Popular (Trending) content before stagnate content

The global content manager will be able to determine default content for each persona should the personalization algorithm returns non-deterministic content based on a minimum weighting value.
